Tragic Plane Crash in Nepal: 18 Lives Lost, Pilot Survives

In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a domestic plane operated by Saurya Airlines crashed shortly after takeoff from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal. The crash claimed the lives of 18 passengers, leaving the pilot as the sole survivor with injuries. This disaster has once again brought attention to the challenging flying conditions and the precarious nature of air travel in the region.

The Incident

At approximately 11:11 a.m. local time, the Saurya Airlines Bombardier CRJ 200 took off from Kathmandu, bound for the popular resort town of Pokhara. Moments after takeoff, the plane veered right and crashed in the eastern section of the airport. Despite the monsoon season, there was no rainfall at the time, although visibility was notably low across the capital.

Police official Basanta Rajauri confirmed that all 18 bodies have been recovered from the crash site. The lone survivor, the pilot, sustained injuries to his eyes but is reported to be out of immediate danger, according to a doctor from Kathmandu Medical College Hospital who chose to remain anonymous.

Challenging Conditions

Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport is notoriously difficult for pilots due to its location within a valley surrounded by mountains. The airport's proximity to the city and surrounding neighborhoods adds to the complexity of takeoff and landing procedures. Pilots often have to navigate through a narrow opening between the mountains, making it a challenging approach for larger aircraft.

Historical Context

This recent crash is not the first aviation disaster at Tribhuvan International Airport. In 2019, a Bangladeshi airliner crashed while attempting to land, resulting in 51 fatalities. An investigation revealed that the plane was misaligned with the runway and the pilot, disoriented, made a desperate attempt to land. Similarly, in 2015, a Turkish Airlines jet skidded off the runway due to dense fog, although no serious injuries were reported in that incident.

The Aftermath

Following the crash, Tribhuvan International Airport was temporarily closed to allow emergency crews and investigators to conduct their work. The bodies of the victims have been transported to T.U. Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for autopsy. The passenger manifest indicated that there were two pilots and 17 passengers on board, comprising 16 Nepali nationals and one Yemeni national.

Response and Investigation

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal issued a press statement confirming the details of the crash and the aircraft involved. The focus now shifts to understanding the cause of the crash and preventing future incidents. Given the history of aviation challenges in Nepal, this incident underscores the need for stringent safety measures and pilot training to navigate the complex terrain.

Conclusion

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with air travel, particularly in regions with challenging topography and weather conditions. As investigators work to uncover the cause of the crash, the loss of 18 lives will weigh heavily on the community and the aviation industry. The pilot's survival, though miraculous, brings little solace to the families of the victims who are now left to mourn their loved ones.
